Let's see. I've been doing this for a little over a year now, if I remember correctly.
As far as tips visualizing, sometimes its hard for me, too. Those times I just set my intent. Like, if I'm trying to ground, but am having trouble visualizing a grounding chord, I'll say to myself "I am now becoming grounded and ridding myself of all energy that is not benefiting me, and returning it to the earth to be recycled."
Visualization is, thankfully, not the only tool we have. Also, if you want to visualize but are just having problems, simplify your visualization. Imagine that you're drawing on a piece of paper or something.
And, as always, make sure you start by grounding. That will clear up any unwanted energy that may hinder your visualizing.
